Acidosis Symptoms and Treatment

Acidosis overviewAn acidification (acidosis) of the body is caused by a disturbed regulation of the acid-base balance: Normally, the human body can compensate acid-base balance with its buffer systems. When all of a sudden acids incurres, so that the pH in the blood drops below 7,36 and acidifies the body. A lung and a kidney function disorder can cause Acidosis.

Depending on the cause of the excess acid in the body are divided into two acute forms of acidosis whose symptoms are partly different:

  • The frequent respiratory acidosis due to the breathing: Lung diseases, paralysis of the respiratory center or rib fractures that cause breathing difficulties and this makes body acidic.

Distinguishing Symptoms of this form of acidification are shortness of breath, bluish discoloration of lips and increased water excretion.

  • The rarer metabolic acidosis is caused by metabolism. This Form of Acidification is expressed by a particularly deep breathing.

An acute acidification of the body affects the heart and blood vessels: In acidosis the peripheral are dilated vessels and reduced cardiac output. This could cause low blood pressure, cardiac dysrhythmia and unconsciousness.

To diagnose an acute acidification of the body is called ‘’ blood gas analysis’’.This is used to mesaure pH and acid-base balance of the blood.

First emergency measure is to combat the acute symptoms and second is to heal the causative disease.

What is Acidosis ?

Counterpart of the acidity or acidosis is called alkalosis where  pH is in the blood over 7.44. Body requires energy to function properly which it receives through food. Various metabolic processes make energy for muscles and organs available.Waste products are excreted the body through the kidneys, liver, skin, lungs and intestines during the metabolism.

Even if these by-products are acidic or basic, a more or less constant pH factor is ordinarily given in the blood between 7. 36 and 7. 44 : Different buffer systems are responsible for this. If suddenly acids or bases occure in the body, buffer systems balance the acids-bases household and thus avoid the appearance of acidosis or alalosis

What are the causes of Acidosis?

An acidification (acidosis) of the body can have various causes. The ‘’body acidifies’’  is either caused by breathing  or metabolically:

The respiration-induced acidosis or respiratory acidosis always  occurs by decrease in breathing (called hypoventilation.): The body breathes in too little carbon dioxide (CO2) and the acidic carbon dioxide is deposited in the Form of bicarbonate in the body.

Among other things, the respiration-related acidosis can be caused by:

  • Lung diseases (such as asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis)
  • Respiratory limitations (for example, by rib fractures)
  • Paralysis of the respiratory center in the brain
  • The metabolic acidosis or metabolic acidosis are associated with too high  concentration of acid metabolites in the blood, so that the buffer systems are overloaded and the pH drops abruptly. Often this type of acidosis is life-threatening.

The following possible causes for the metabolic acidosis:

Increasing form acids or the body receives too much acid from the outside (so-called. Additionsazidose). Possible reasons are:

  • diabetes mellitus
  • alcoholism
  • starvation
  • heavy muscular work
  • shock
  • Poisoning
  • The body excretes too little acid through the kidneys of (is called Retentionsazidose).
  • Prolonged diarrhea
  • Taking carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (diuretic)

Possible Symptoms of Acidosis

Symptoms with acidosis are related can vary greatly. Noticeable acidification of the body depends on why the acid-base balance is disturbed. The frequent respiration-induced acidification of the body ( İs called respiratory acidosis) is s always connected to a is called’’ hypoxia’’ which means that the body tissue is undersupplied as a result of decreased breathing completely or partly with oxygen.

Symptoms of Acidosis

Typical syptoms are

  • Shortness of breath
  • Blue-colored lips
  • Disorientation
  • Increased excretion of water
  • Any acute acidosis also affects on the heart and blood vessels
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Arrhythmias
  • heavy unconsciousness

Acidosis Treatment

The against acute acidosis treatment has two objectives:

  • To eliminate the cause of the excess acid in the body
  • Tackle with emergency measures to prevent the acute symptoms of the acidification of the body.

Acidosis Process

If the buffer systems of the body have to work constantly, because the body is too acidic and starts to dissolve increased mineral salts and phosphates  to neutralize the acids. This may in the long run lead to osteoporosis (brittle bones).

If the acid-base balance damages and any resulting acidification remains untreated, later in the following diseases may also occur:

  • Chronic pain
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Migraine
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Arteriosclerosis

Acidosis PreventionAcidosis Prevention

Preventing a hyperacidity (acidosis) is mainly: Early and forcefully against cases of possible triggers of acidification of the body. This includes:

  • Dysfunction of the lungs (such as bronchial asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis)
  • Respiratory limitations (for example, by rib fractures)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Chronic renal disease.

If you want to prevent an acidification of the body, it is also generally advisable to consider the following tips:

  • Provide a balanced diet
  • Make enough exercise.
